Checklist for finding a Moving Service or Moving Company

Finding a good reputable moving service is often a job in itself. Because there is no license to apply for or no checks to be made on these companies, many fly-by-night companies open up and provide less than satisfactory services to their clients. Although, they may offer you cost-effective and even “cheap” services, you often get what you pay for. Therefore, perhaps the best way to search out and find a good moving service is by word of mouth, most moving companies will not hesitate at all to provide potential customers with references of former clients.

You may want to check with the Better Business Bureau, as well, this is a free service and in most cities there is accessibility to local BBB’s on the Internet. As far as credentials go, look for companies that have a DOT number, although this offers the consumer little protection. It is required for most moving companies to have a DOT number in order to operate on state and national highways.

You may want to ask the moving service for a “binding” contract, as well. Most moving estimates are based upon information you and the moving company have discussed, however, there are times when an extra charge will appear on the bill at the end of the move. A binding contract is a written document that clearly states and describes the shipment and services that are to be provided to the customer. The cost is set in stone and so are the services, however, if the customer decides to stray from the binding contract and acquire other services that are not mentioned on the paperwork, those amounts can be added to the total cost.

Liability is another issue to consider when choosing a moving service. Liability insurance is purchased and often included in the quote. Depending upon your contents and their worth, you will most likely need to purchase some type of liability insurance. Basic coverage provides a valuation of 60 cents per pound per article, and usually there is no cost to the consumer, however, if you take into consideration the costs of your goods based upon a per pound estimate, you may be selling yourself short. You may want to consider purchasing additional liability insurance that is based upon depreciated value or full face value of the items, although this is usually expensive, if the destination is long distance or over seas, it’s worth it.

The best way to move is to prepare for it in advance.

Ask your realtor for advice on hiring a moving company.

Mark each box with the room name so you can put it in the right place when you move in. It makes no sense moving boxes twice.
